Realm War II took place between the years of 851 PR and 900 PR. Unline the first Realm War which was fought between kingdoms and nations, Realm War II was was fought between independent city states and domains, and military organizations across Quelmar and served as one of the more devastating conflicts during the War of Many Names, where the mortals of Quelmar were at war with the draconic servants of the evil goddess Tiamat. The second Realm War followed the War of Dragons and preceded the Second Holy War. Realm War II was notable for being the first major Quelmar conflict where firearms were a commonly used weapon among the waring militaries.

Background

After the death of the Platinum Dragon Bahamut, god of justice and good aligned dragons, many across the realm become disheartened and began to lose hope that the war against the dragons was winnable. At the same time, dragon attacks across the realm had made it so that resources had begun to dwindle. Seeing the opportunity, Tiamat began to sow confusion and disarray between the allied forces of Quelmar, having her agents infiltrate governments, cities, political parties, and even some private companies in order to exert her influence from the shadows.

Seeing the developments in new arcane technologies, Tiamat worried that mortals could soon create weapons that rivaled her dragons. During the second Realm War, Tiamat focused much of her efforts towards the continent of Isonhound which was at the heart of magical and technological developments in Quelmar. The destruction of her ally, the shadow dragon Feredemius, in Isonhound had dealt a major blow to Tiamat's war effort, and the new developments of airships had made it easier for heroes and militaries alike to combat dragons.

Notable Fronts

The Woldin Front

For centuries the Wold Order had served as the elven protectors of Isonhound, believing that they were the continent's rightful guardians. Though as the war against dragons continued on, many in the order fell back on old Woldlin ideologies that they were the true people of Isonhound and that there was no cost to great in order to protect their ancestral lands. Late into the War of Dragons, the Wold Order had begun capturing dragons in order to train future dragon slayers. Guarded by the orders greatest wizards, these captured dragons whispered terrible nightmares into the ears of the Wold Order, making them even more frightened and paranoid. At the same time, Tiamat used her draconic servants to orchestrate calculated strikes against vital Wold Order supply lines and civilian populations.

It wasn't long before the Wold Order fell into elven supremacist ideologies. Believing that they needed an organized front with them at the head to defeat the dragons, the Wold Order began forceful conscriptions of any able bodied warriors into their ranks and proceeded to institute military law over an towns and cities in their jurisdiction in order to divert more resources to the war front.

Many cities in Isonhound resisted the Wold Order's forceful advance and rose up arms against the eleves. The largest opponents of the Wold order would be the independent cities of Saltport, Sneerwell, and Gammelgard. As the war progressed, the officially came together and created the Defensive League Opposing Wold (DLOW). Notably, the city of Seglock, which for many years had been at the heart of Isonhound affairs was not a part of the DLOW as it was the first city that the Wold Order extended their influence over due to the city's large population of adventurers and the cities proximity to the Wold stronghold city of Synàra.

The Woldin Front was concentrated primarily around the city of Sneerwell which was under siege for most of the war and the mountains of East-Central Isonhound. The Woldin Front became infamous for their use of high level magic to devastate battlefields and for their use of captured dragons as weapons of war.

During the siege of Sneerwell, the Wold Order seized many of the factories and refineries of Pendergras Industries, a famous manufacturer of airships and magical constructs. Repurposing these factories, the Wold Order formed the Ministry of Aerial Combat which began to build airships for the Wold Order to use during the war.

The Woldin Front was the longest lasting front of the entire Second Realm War, though the fighting was broken up by two periods where both sides agreed to a truce, only to later return to war. The front would end in a flash of tragedy as the Wold Order deployed their greatest weapon on the neighboring continent of Osugbo, the Greenfire Bomb, a bomb that destroyed any life that wasn't of fey ancestry. Seeing this show of terrifying power, the Wold Order was abandoned by their allies, leaving them vulnerable to an attack by Tiamat and her dragons, who feared that one day the bomb might be used on them. Tiamat and her servants attacked the cities of Synàra and Sneerwell, as well as burned down most of the surrounding forest in an event that would be recorded as the Second Razing of Isonhound.

The Dune Front

Due to draconic attacks, the multi-city alliance in the desert continent of Pteris known as The Seven Cities lost most of their usable farmland and trade routes destroyed. After many years of surviving on dwindling food stores, the capital of the seven cities, Ugarat, had a shift in political leadership who believed that salvation could only come from making peace with the dragons. Ugarat would soon form an alliance with the ancient blue dragon Hyarn (He-Yarn), the Sky-Splitter. The other six cities soon followed Ugarat's lead and bent the knee to Hyarn. While the cities were able to feed themselves once more, Hyrarn always made sure that the Seven Cites were still on the brink of falling back into ruin.

Under the dragon goddess Tiamat's command, Hyran directed the Seven Cities to invade the region of Oppidan, a lush peninsula in the south of Pteris. Here Hyran promised the Seven Cities that they could steal all the food they needed to feed their people. This led the Seven Cities into direct combat with the Oppidan War Peacetalks Commitment (OWPC), an alliance of the five largest cities in Oppidan, including Dardin, Granite, Jewelspar, Lunas, and Rwendia.

The Dune Front was centralized around the Tavorel River, a river that flowed from the Fiddlehead Mountains and down into the southern seas. This river was large enough to host large seafaring battleships from the OWPC. A smaller ground based battlefield was centered around the town of Holtston which switched hands repeatedly throughout the war. Near the end of the war, much of the town had been reduced to smoke and ash.

During the war, the Seven Cities had a significantly smaller army compared to the OWPC, but they fought ten times as fiercely, for they knew if they lost, their families would go hungry and die. Many within their ranks had also begun to adapt the teachings of the Cult of the Dragon which were being preached by the dragon-worshipping agents of Hyarn. The Seven Cities were also aided by mighty dragons in service to Tiamat. Late into the war, Hyarn subjected a number of Thri-Kreen tribes in the Pteris deserts and had them sneak deep into OWPC territory to serve as guerilla fighters to disrupt the OWPC's war effort.

While the OWPC was the much larger dog in the fight, they struggled to combat the Seven Cities due to intense infighting. While they were all part of an alliance, the OWPC alliance had primarily been formed to end The Oppidan War and to stop the fighting between the cities. The OWPC managed to maintain the front with their large army and had the strongest naval fleet of any army during the Realm War which they used to maintain control of the Tavorel River.

Most of the infighting between the cities was between the elven city of Jewelspar and the dwarven city of Dardin. The values of both cities clashed frequently, causing disorganization in their combined military ranks. In 879 PR, Dardin would pull out of the alliance completely after a particularly brutal attack by Hyarn and retreat into the underground tunnels built by their forefathers during The Holy War.

Eventually, the OWPC would be able to break past the front lines and assault the Seven Cities directly. Though to do so, they would have to cross many ethical lines, such as allying themselves with the Wold Order, and freeing the evil lich, Wyrkarm the Deathless Hierophant. Eventually in 893 PR they were able to force the Seven Cities into surrendering. The stories of what happened to both the ancient dragon Hyarn and the lich Wyrkarm are yet unknown.

The Storm Front

The tropical archipelago known as the Gulfithorp Isles had once been protected by a bronze dragon in ages past named Tenorixion. After Tenorixion's death, the islands were left vulnerable and suffered exploitation by both the gnomes of the Levinkan Dynasty to the north, and the militaristic nation of Troverth to the south. During this period, Tenorixion's personal cult began preaching that salvation would soon arrive. Their prayers were answered as one day, emerging from the sea was Tenorixion himself in his full draconic glory! In actuality though, this wasn't the long dead Tenorixion at all, but rather an imposter dragon. The real identity of the False Tenorixion was the Bronze Dragon Brenavach, a self-described Tenorixion superfan who believed that it was their job to keep the legacy of Tenorixion alive.

The return of a guardian dragon of the Gulfithorp Isles would not go undiscovered by the realm. The gnomes of the Levinkan Dynasty had long desired the islands for themselves due to their strategic position between the continents of Amusa and Levinkan and for its vast untapped resources. With a little bit of a push from Tiamat's spies within the dynasty, the Levinkan Dynasty declared war on the isles, claiming that it was a war of defense to eliminate the threat of the dragon. The Dynasty began a campaign of propaganda within its borders, convincing its people that the dragon of the Gulfithorp Isles was a threat to their way of life and could attack them at any moment.

The dynasty began their attack by invading the island of Morugana and conquering the town of Pepperoncini, a stronghold for Tenorixion's cult. Knowing that they were no match against the Levinkan Dynasty, the people of the Gulfithorpe Isles pleaded to their neighbor to the south for aid, Troverth. For this aid, the isles promised Troverth full access to their navel trading routes. Troverth, hoping to distract from their own domestic issues, accepted the call of the Gulfithorpians and launched a land assault on mainland Levinkan. Landing in Western Levinkan, Troverth was able to conscript the aid of the locals who were against the Levinkan Dynasty in the east. Now facing two separate enemies, the Levinakn Dynasty was forced to split their attention between their fights abroad and at home.

In their war efforts, the Levinkan Dynasty employed their use of automated constructs known as Automs, robotic humanoids that the Levinkan's had reprogrammed as dangerous soldiers. Leading the war front were also powerful gnomish storm-sorcerers who were distant relatives and cousins of the current ruling family. They were able to command the weather around them, conjuring an everlasting storm above the armies of Troverth, giving the front its name.

In 885 PR Troverth was forced to pull out of the war and retreat from Levinkan as domestic rebellions in Troverth threatened Troverth's military government. With Troverth out of the war, the Levinkan Dynasty push back into the Gulfithorp Isles and establish themselves within the region, ending the front in 894 PR.

The Spear Front

The Spear Front was the most chaotic and messy of all the major fronts in the second realm war, being fought by many separate independent city states in the Alest and Diimgard domains of Osugbo. At the same time, many Orc, Goblin, and Kobold tribes in Osugbo took this opportunity to raid and pillage. In total, throughout the war, there were 6 major separate warring factions, including the city of Dolmvay, Elin Barad, the Steelhand Clan, Friþleas, Ethiruva, and the Howling Clans, which was the name given to the many local tribes of Orcs, goblins, and kobolds.

There are many different accounts for why the war began, but most can track it down to the assassination of the Dolmvay president during a parade by an extremist citizen from the small city of Leishport. It is believed this individual was driven to murder when Dolmvay moved to take full control of the bay both cities sat on, forcing all ships, including ones from Leishport, to pay large tolls. This led to a series of events where Dolmvay declared war of Leishport, which caused Leishport's ally, the much larger elven city of Elin Barad, to declare was on Dolmvay. Caught in the crossfire was the Steelhand Clan, an ancient clan of dwarves, who began to suffer due to the war, causing them to join the fight as well. Soon after, the cities of Friþleas and Ethiruva would declare war on each other as well, since both cities had made alliances with opposite sides in the wars in Isonhound, the city of Ethiruva allying with the Wold Order, and the city of Friþleas allying with the Defensive League Opposing Wold.

The war would quickly dissolve is a mire of chaotic battles, with rapidly shifting alliances and betrayals between all the cities. This was not helped by the aggressive Howling Clans who were using the war as a cover to raid and pillage across the Diimgard region.

The Spear Front would officially get its name in 872 PR when a small order of warriors known as the Knights of the Spear began traveling across all of Osugbo, trying to broker peace between the cities. These efforts would get the order destroyed, but their travels had spread their order's symbol of a spear throughout all of Osugbo.

As the Spear Front progressed, it became ground zero for the World Breaker Plague, a horrific disease created by the dragon goddess Tiamat that would mutate humanoids who have magical potential into horrific monsters. As the plague spread, the cities became increasing paranoid and militarized, spending a lot of their resources on expansive quarantines in a vain attempt to stop the plagues spread. Many citizens in the Alest region attempted to flee to Isonhound to escape the plague.

With the arriving refugees from Osugbo, and fear that the plague may spread across Isonhound, the Wold Order activated their greatest weapon, a substance known as Greenfire, which violently transforms all non-fey or plant creatures it touches into plants. In 899 PR, the Wold Order used a large number of Greenfire bombs across Osugbo, destroying a large portion of north western Osugbo and turning it into a floral wasteland. This would officially conclude the Spear Front.

Major Factions and Alliances in the War

The Dominion

As the second Realm War progressed, the Wold Order sent diplomats to neighboring continents hoping to form allies in their effort to expand their influence and "unite" against the draconic threat. They found footing with other nations who held similar ideals, mainly the Levinkan Dynasty.

As The five cities of The Oppidan War Peacetalks Commitment began losing ground in the war, the Wold Order was able to bring them into their alliance, trading rare minerals from Pteris in return for military and magical aid from the Wold Order. After the events of the Alestian Reckoning and the use of the Greenfire Bombs, the Wold Order's allies turned against them, breaking the Dominion.

The Concord

The Concord was formed as a reaction to the rise of the Dominion. What started as many separate fronts slowly turned into two opposing factions fighting for control of Quelmar's future. After the second realm war, what remained of the concord would spear front the reinvigorated war against dragons.

Independent

While these factions were major players in the war, none of them aligned with either the Dominion or the Concord.

The Fivefold Financial Trust

To the realm of Quelmar, the Fivefold Financial Trust is known across the realms as one of the most stable and discreet banking institutions, a place where nobles, merchants, and even governments safeguard their fortunes. But what most of the realm doesn't know, is that the bank's primary clientele, are dragons, and that the bank's manager is Tiamat herself! Outwardly, the Fivefold Financial trust operates with pristine transparency, offering loans, managing treasuries, and funding infrastructure projects under a banner of prosperity and unity. Its emblem, a five-pointed star, is said to represent balance and cooperation, a clever facade that masks its true purpose: to funnel all of the realm's wealth into the colossal hoard of Tiamat. During the second realm war, the Fivefold Financial trust was the unseen hand channeling vast resources into the many war fronts, making sure that all participants were well funded and eager to destroy and conquer their fellow man.

Notable Events

The Liberation of Seglock (873 PR - Wold Front)

At the very start of the second Realm War, the Wold Order took control of the city of Seglock and began forceful conscriptions of Seglock citizens into their growing army. Seglock would remain under the boot of the Wold Order for many years, all the while rebel dissent began to formant under the surface. The heroes of Isonhound who had saved the continent years before during the Battle of Five Lights, many of whom were from Seglock, would not take the Wold Order's tyranny lying down and did their best to fight back.

In 872 PR, dwarven mages from the city of Gammelgard initiated Operation Backdoor: where Gammelgard wizards began to teleport weapons and magical items into Seglock to arm the Seglock rebels. In 873 PR Gammelguard was able to teleport in a small force of soldiers who helped the Seglock rebels retake Seglock City Hall as well as a major Wold airship yard right outside the city.

An impassioned speech by the rebels got the people of Seglock on their side, and as one the city rose up against the Wold Order and threw the order out of their city, making Seglock free once more. For decades after this event, Seglock would celebrate Liberation Day in remembrance of those who fought to save their city.

The Great Undersea March (876 PR - Storm Front)

During the second Realm War, the Levinkan Dynasty made use of many legions of automs left over from the War of the Forged. In 876 PR, Troverth and West Levinkan forces managed to reach the city of Zobeck, the capital city of the Levinkan Dynasty. As the invading armies began to lay siege, the Levinkan Dynasty as a large number of their automs walk into the ocean and begin to circumnavigate the continent to reach Troverth's defensive position in West Levinkan. This undersea march took an entire year, but when they finally arrived, the autom legions emerged from the sea, taking the Troverthians by surprise and forcing them to pull their armies away from Zobeck to fight off these suddenly appearing constructs.

Discovery of the Steelhand Colossus (876 PR - The Spear Front)

In ages past, the ancestors of the Steelhand Clan knew that they had to be ready for when dragons one day returned to the realm, and so devised the greatest dragon killing weapon in history, the Steelhand Colossus. Crafted by the greatest smiths of the age out of stone and adamantine, and inscribed with prayers to the dwarven god Moradin, the Steelhand Colossus was designed to be the dwarves' greatest protector, a mountain sized construct able to stand up against the mightiest of armies and the fiercest of dragons. But when the dwarves of the clan were forced to abandon their home in Steelhand Hall under mysterious circumstances, all memory and record of the Steelhand Colossus was lost.

That was until 883 PR , when a violent earthquake struck the mountains inhabited by the sturdy dwarves of the Steelhand Clan. This earthquake temporarily forced the clan to pull back their armies to rebuild what was destroyed during the disaster. But the earthquake had also revealed an ancient weapon long thought lost to the ages, the Steelhand Colossus. It took a while for the dwarves to figure out how to control the titan of stone and metal, and in the end after figuring out how to activate it, the best the dwarves could do was direct it towards a target before calling it back to them.

The Steelhand Colossus would first be deployed against a Dolmvay legion that was breaching into the Steelhand Clan's territory in 877 PR, leaving few survivors. The construct would then be sent into Dolmvay controlled territory and given the direction to cause as much destruction as possible.

In 881 PR, the city of Elin Barad was struggling to combat the World Breaker Plague which had begun to spread within their city. Seeing an opportunity to snuff out their rival for good, the dwarves of the Steelhand Clan sent the colossus into the city, with orders to flatten Elin Barad until there was nothing left.

Sadly, in 883 PR, the dwarves of the clan were forced to retreat into the deep caverns of Steelhand Hall as the World Breaker Plague threatened to wipe them out for good. Without any masters to give it commands, the Steelhand Colossus would be left to aimlessly roam Osugbo.

The Thunderpeak Accords (882 PR - Dune Front)

For many centuries had the Fiddlehead Mountains been inhabited by Giants. In the cliffs and valleys lived mighty Hill Giants and tough Stone Giants. In the caverns below lived Fire Giants who made great forges. But none were greater then the Storm Giants who lived in the mountains' peaks. These Storm Giants were of Clan Aegirborn, and were considered the undisputed rulers of the mountains by the other giants who lived below them.

When armies from both the Seven Cities and the OWPC began to move through the mountains in search of ways to strike against their enemies, their presence did not go unnoticed by the local giants who fought back against the intruding soldiers. Hoping to avoid anymore conflict with the giants, ambassadors from the OWPC made the treacherous journey up the Fiddlehead Mountains in hopes of getting to speak with Clan Aeigirborn. After surviving all the mountain could throw at them and even an attack by a White Dragon, the ambassadors were able to meet with the Storm Giants of Clan Aeigirborn. After 33 days of negotiations, the ambassadors were able to secure safe passage for the OWPC through the mountains and made peace with the giants, signing the Thunderpeak Accords. The specific details of what occurred during these peace talks have still yet to be shared.

The World Breaker Plague (880 PR Onwards - Spear Front)

With the pressure of dragonslayers off her back, Tiamat was free to continue her experiments to create the World Breaker, the monster the monster prophesized to one day end the world, more commonly referred to as a Tarrasque. In these endeavors, while she had not yet succeeded in creating a Tarrasque, she crafted the World Breaker Plague, a disease that would specifically target any humanoids with magical potential. Tiamat's hope was that this virus could take away the arcane advantage that the people of Quelmar had over her dragons.

A creature infected with the Worldbreaker Plague would suffer horrific mutations, growing new arms, legs, mouths, and even heads, and transform them into terrible monsters that only sought to devour others and spread the plague. Tiamat would send the plague to the many corners of Quelmar, but it would find most success in the bloody chaos of the Spear Front.

Most of those infected with the World Breaker virus would be destroyed when the Wold Order deployed Greenfire bombs across northern Osugbo.. Yet pockets of the disease would remain for years to come.

The Alestian Reckoning (898 PR)

Hoping to stem the spread of the World Breaker Plague in Osugbo, the Wold Order use their newly developed Greenfire Bomb, which destroys a large portion of the northern Alest and Diimgard regions. While it successfully stems the spread of the plague, all of the regions affected by the Greenfire bomb are devastated. All non-fey creatures touched by the greenfire violently grew plants out of their bodies, killing anyone in the region who were not either fey or had fey ancestry, like elves. The primary component to creating Greenfire is Wovenstone Crystal, a rare crystal only found in either the Feywild, or regions touched by fey influence.

After the Alestian Reckoning and the reveal of Greenfire, most of the realm turned on the Wold Order, believing that the elven order had gone to far and were now a threat to Quelmar itself. But the many nations of Quelmar were beat to the punch by Tiamat herself, finally re-entering the war now that the people of Quelmar had made a weapon that could harm her.

The Second Razing of Isonhound (899 PR)

The first Razing of Isonhound had been orchestrated by the two ancient dragons Ith and Mesanth in 700 PR, where the two dragons nearly two million people and burning most major population centers to the ground. The destruction Tiamat would wrought on Isonhound in retaliation for the Wold Order's use of the Greenfire Bomb would dwarf the destruction caused by Ith and Mesanth. For the first time in nearly 50 years, Tiamat would manifest an avatar of herself and attacked the city of Synàra, leaving a smoking pile of ash in its place. At the same time, four adult dragons would attack the city of Sneerwell, which had the largest Wovenstone refineries in all of Quelmar. Over the course of the next year, Tiamat's servants would relentlessly ravage the continent of Isonhound, killing millions.

Consequences

The Dragon Queen Tiamat's plan to turn the people of Quelmar against each other had worked. Most of the realm's most powerful armies were greatly weakened and much of its lands had been destroyed by those who promised to protect it. Even more, it allowed Tiamat to reorganize her forces, strengthening the hold she had on her own territory, and allowing a new generation of dragons to grow without dragon slayers hunting them down.

The Wold Order, one of the biggest opponents against the dragon invasions was but a husk of its former self. But even though it ultimately lost, many of its extreme ideologies had spread across Quelmar. During the war, many people had turned to faith as a refuge, and mixing with Wold ideologies, led to the rise of many extreme and fanatical religious organizations, seeking draconic destruction at all costs. These churches were paranoid about potential draconic infiltrators, being quick to persecute anyone with draconic heritage or execute anyone who they suspected to be in league with Tiamat. What was left of the realms armies organized into bands of righteous crusaders. Even many metallic dragons who opposed Tiamat were hunted down by these crusaders.

The second Realm War cemented firearms as the realms primary weapon of choice above swords, spears, and bows.

After the Alestian Reckoning and the Second Razing of Isonhound, many Quelmar world governments became both fascinated and terrified of Greenfire, seeking ways to control it themselves and making sure no one else could make it. This created a race to control the realm's supply of Wovenstone, which at the time was primarily used to create airships. Many airship factories were shit down and private companies were heavily restricted in their use of wovenstone to prevent private organizations from creating their own Greenfire.
