Sardior, also known as Abzu, is the Dragon Deity of knowledge and trickery, and the Ruby King of Gem Dragons. He was shattered sometime in Prehistory and nearly forgotten to the ages until being resurrected in 826 PR. He presides over his Ruby Court, a divine court of five seats each representing a different type of Gemstone Dragon.

History

Prehistory

Sardior was one of the Four Dragons who predated the formation of Quelmar by the Creator Gods. In response to the arrival of the gods, Sardior and their partner, the Dragon Queen Tiamat bore two children, the Platinum Dragon Bahamut and the Dragon of fate Enki.

As the gods began to shape their realm, Sardior longed for the ebb and flow of what the primordial chaos once was. To help him contemplate this issue, Sardior crafted the Ruby Court, a court of Gem Dragons who could help advise him.

Eventually Sardior's longing for the old world and the gods desire to create a new one came to a head. It is not known what happened exactly, but the end result was the gods shattering Sardior against the world, destroying his body and scaring the earth, creating Abzcar Canyon.

It is said that Sardior's blood flowed into and beneath the earth, creating The River Styx, and that his last moment of anger either created or opened the way to the Abyss, allowing [[Demon}Demons]] into the realm of Quelmar. Others say as well that from his remains emerged Charon, the ferryman of the dead astride his boat with his oar and book in hand, floating atop the River Styx as the last son of Sardior.

It is impossible to discern how far back in Prehistory that Sardior was shattered.

BR Era

At the start of history, only two known fragments or remnants of Abzu's existence remained in the realm: the existence of Abzcar Canyon, and the many mysterious Existence Crystals scattered across Kiston.

PR Era

The crystals of Sardior began to draw new attention in the realm when they became the focus of an emerging force of people known as the Warforged. Somehow these shards of the shattered god were essential to the creation of their Souls and purpose. As a result, these people were granted a natural Draconic Boon…having the ability to hide from the Dragons of the realm. Some theorize this could be Sardior's attempt from beyond to protect all the little bits of himself left in the realm.

Resurrection

The Battle of Five Lights

The ceremony to resurrect Sardior was performed in 826 PR at the five peaks of the Northern Snowy Mountains under heavy assault from a shadow-corrupted Feredemius and his army of shadow monsters. Venaleth was the only member of the Prehistoric Court to reclaim his original seat. Echemus, the son of Eros, took the Crystal seat after his father failed to arrive to the ceremony in time. The other court seats faced similar complications. Tuschello refused to be revived from the Astral Sea, Bleucorundum arrived late to the ceremony, and Smargarg—a young Emerald Dragon the team had enlisted—failed to arrive at all. This resulted in the final seats being filled by Durian and Delphi—Harbingers by blood—as well as Spinel—Harbinger by a Sapphire Boon. The power of the ceremony destroyed their original bodies and reincarnated them as Gem Dragons.

Gem Artifacts

Performing the ceremony required each court member to attune to their respective gem artifact, consisting of the Amethyst Tome, Corundum Egg, Emerald Blade, Crystal Moonwell, and Topaz Astrolabe. Once all five artifacts had been synchronized, the final step of the ceremony required the wielder of the Emerald Blade to shatter the Corundum Egg, from which Sardior would finally be resurrected. The Amethyst Tome contained precise instructions for the ceremony to be properly carried out.

The divine significance of these artifacts was absorbed as part of the ceremony, and an item of close personal significance to each of the reborn court members became the new gem artifacts (for example, the Selune Splinter belonging to Durian's clan transformed into the Emerald Splinter).

Additionally, an Obsidian Artifact existed which could be molded into the shape of any of the other gem artifacts, embodying its essence and allowing it to function as a proxy during the ceremony. This attribute became vital when the Corundum Egg was briefly stolen by Feredemius.

PR Era

Sardior's appearance just after his resurrection was far different from the immense Dragon seen in Prehistoric depictions…instead taking the shape of a slender, ruby-scaled Dragonborn or wyrmling. This smaller form could be the result of the god being nearly forgotten to history for so long, meaning he would need to accrue new followers in order to build his power back to where it once was. It could also be due to his shattered Prehistoric form remaining scattered amongst the planes in the form of Existence Crystals, meaning he could potentially gain more power by reabsorbing these fragments found throughout Quelmar or even by accruing additional fragments from across the multiverse.
