The Lost Hoard

Type Space Ship
Location Eastern Amusa, Wyvern's Roost
Inhabiting Race Mind Flayers

The Lost Hoard was rumored to be a legendary treasure hidden in the wilds of Amusa. In reality it was a crashed Mind Flayer ship holding untold horrors.

About[edit | edit source]

The Lost Hoard was buried deep below the earth under Wyvern's Roost. The crater's inhabitants had built a temple around its entrance, but the interiors were made of cold and sleek metal. The ship was designed to be able to travel between the planes and carried an army of dormant Mind Flayers in its hull. The ship was controlled by an Mind Flayer experiment known as The Overmind

History[edit | edit source]

Soon after The Overmind was installed into the ship, the Overmind went rogue, killing most of the ships inhabitants. Those it didn't kill it trapped in stasis and turned into technological zombies under its control. During the coup, the ship crashed into Amusa, creating Wyvern's Roost Crater. A Mind Flayer named Myxlixinal managed to survive the crash and remained in Amusa, working to gather his strength and formulate a plan to retake the ship. During its time hidden beneath the crater, the ships aberrant technology began to spread and infect the local wildlife, turning them alien and monstrous.

The ship would be discovered by the two-headed dragon Kavanmort around 822 PR who wished to use the ship and its armies to take over Amusa. During this time, Kavanmort moved their massive hoard of gold and magic items to the command deck of the ship. He was stopped though by the heroic adventurer Aloysius Tempest who merged their mind with the Overmind in order to trap Kavanmort in stasis and seal the ship away. Before doing this, Aloysius removed the ships navigation console, The Aestorian Codex to make sure that the ship could not fly again. He then gave the broken pieces of the codex to his friends and family to hide away.

After the ship was sealed away, rumors of a great treasure hidden in Amusa began to circulate. After Kavanmort's disappearance, many wondered what happened to his hoard, and so dubbed this treasure, "The Lost Hoard." Over the years the legend would evolve, some claiming the Lost Hoard was a forgotten stash of the Devil Mammon, while others claimed it was part of the hoard of Tiamat. as many explorers flocked to Amusa to search for this treasure, just as many were claimed by the dangerous wilds.

Many years later in 894 PR the hunt for the Lost Hoard would begin again as the pieces of the Aestorian Codex began to reemerge. The hunt was first reignited by the Forst Giants of The Frostfell Empire who sought to use the riches of the hoard to fun their conquest of Quelmar. After their defeat, the hunt was picked back up by both The Tempest Brothers Expeditionary Company and the Pit Fiend Kalzivach. Eventually the Tempest Brothers Expeditionary company acquired all the pieces of the codex and used it to find that the Lost Hoard was beneath Wyvern's Roost Crater.

Around this time, a crack in the ship had been discovered by a local tribe of Yuan-Ti. The Yuan-Ti became infected by the influence of the Overmind and began to worship Aloysius Tempest as a god. They were stopped from spreading the corrupt technology of the ship to the rest of the wilds by the Tempest Brothers Expeditionary Company.

After opening the way to the center of Wyvern's Roost crater, the company delved below the earth, hoping to acquire what treasures they believed were there. Instead the found the lost mind flayer ship and became trapped within, all the while being hunted by the Overmind and Aloysius. During this time the Mind Flayer Myxlixinal managed to return to the ship and override its defenses, reactivating the ships engine and raising it into the sky. To prevent the ship from being used, the company destroyed the ship's planar engine, causing it to overload and destroy itself in a partially opened planar rift.

Over the next few decades, scraps left behind from the ship would continue to be gathered by explorers and scholars who began to reverse engineer its parts, setting the groundwork for what would eventually become modern technology.
