Sameera is strong headed, sarcastic, and sometimes too direct. She can find herself easily offending others when she isn't filtering her thoughts. This is driven mostly by her curiosity and willingness to ask questions. She is always looking for the fastest way out. Since being brought back to life the otherwise carefree mentality has stuttered. She struggles with trust and doesn't understand how quickly her world fell apart. She hasn't really been sleeping well since returning to the living. It makes her impatient and impulsive.

Sameera was born in 445 PR in Balabag, the only child of the prominent Sukoru family. This family of air genasi had made a name for themselves during the Hunt for the Ancients, traveling the world in search of items of immense power. Though they never found any of these legendary artifacts, the gold they earned and the connections they forged afforded them a life of comfort, art, and leisure. Relics from their adventures littered the home in which Sameera grew up.

Sameera was expected to follow in their footsteps—their little protégé. A future as a powerful air elementalist lay before her, or so everyone believed. But it was not meant to be. When her magic emerged, it was fire that answered her call. At first, she tried to hide it from her parents, but the more she practiced, the harder it became to deny. The fire seemed to scorch and curse her skin, consuming the light blue hues of her air ancestry and turning them to copper.

Her father called her polluted. He locked her away and told the world that his daughter was lost. Guilt gnawed at him for years, yet he spoiled Sameera with everything except the one thing she wanted most: freedom.

When Sameera finally came of age, her mother’s sister bargained for her release. Sameera would move to Ravel, take on a new name, and live as though she had never been part of the Sukoru family. Her father accepted the deal, seeing it as the only solution to the growing risk that Sameera would simply run away.

Free from her father’s shame and finally out in the world, Sameera used her fire to burn murals into the streets and walls of Ravel. Then everything froze over.

I wake up with two Capybara folk staring down at me, my memories hitting me like a deluge of water.

I was walking out of my aunt’s house, headed for the town square in search of pickles. A giant shark monster appeared and bull-rushed me. While I was able to escape that incident, the relief was short-lived. My curiosity carried me several rooftops over. I still really wanted that pickle. From my vantage point, the town square was a wreck. Giant mutated blue creatures were everywhere, with one massive frost-giant skeleton leading them. He stood inches from a giant blue hole in the middle of the square. Suddenly, a large blue bird came out of nowhere, and everything went dark.

I woke up to a large number of glowing eyes staring at me, and as I floated, I began to think about what my life had meant. I was a spoiled, single child of two prominent air-genasi elementalists. They had made names for themselves in Balabag for their art styles and expected I’d follow their lead. Forever their disappointment, I learned to play with fire instead of air. I was still artistic, but it wasn’t enough for them. I had turned my back on my culture. So I left to live with my aunt and see if life in Ravel would change anything. Then the freeze happened, and we were left sheltering in place for WAY too long. Here I was, thinking one day I’d make a name for myself with all the elements at my control. Instead, I’m murdered on the hunt for pickles…

I snap back to focus as several of my newfound friends discuss taking a mercenary job for someone named Maynard. A devil was after him, and he wanted them dead. While I didn’t know Maynard, I was already annoyed by him. The way Neighbor Craig talked about him, he had convinced them he was “fixable.” Whatever else he’d done, he had convinced them that their value hinged on what he thought about them—which had me grinding my teeth. I was dead… Not just anyone could bring a three-week-dead body back to full health. If anything came from today, I’d help Neighbor Craig see their worth without the orc.

Mundy explained that he knew Maynard from a ship expedition. He talked about how the group he was with convinced Maynard to sell his soul so someone else would receive a devil’s boon. The more I learn, the less I respect Maynard… He doesn’t respect himself, let alone the people he “loves.”

As we walk back into Ravel, my nerves are on edge. Standing outside Maynard’s house is a devil and her minions. Neighbor Craig approaches the house. Maynard’s mother answers the door and proceeds to tell Neighbor Craig just how worthless they are. It draws Maynard’s attention, and before I can respond, Neighbor Craig vanishes into the house.

I watch as Takashi reads through Maynard’s contract. Tessa, Oric, and I take time distracting the devil with dumb antics. This buys Takashi enough time to manipulate the contract and effectively void its contents. Mephix is livid and states that despite this contract’s failure, Maynard is dumb enough that he will just sign another one. Mephix approaches the house, and as she does so, Tessa strikes. She kills the devil in one hit and sends it back to hell. I learn that devils just come back with enough time.

We enter the house to retrieve Neighbor Craig and are confronted by his mother. She is a mean and apparently horny woman who has eyes only for Mundy. We use Mundy’s sacrifice to make our way into the basement. As we arrive, Neighbor Craig and he are arguing. Whatever they have been talking about has led to Neighbor Craig being close to tears of frustration. Tessa cases the upstairs for anything valuable while Mundy suffers. Yuki and Osric case the basement and strip the house of most of its valuables. My anger boils over at Neighbor Craig’s distress, and I just want this over. I set the house on fire.

It isn’t the controlled burn I was hoping for, and the fire effectively traps three of us downstairs with Maynard. I step into the fire next to Neighbor Craig and gently hold their face in my hands. I tell them that the people who truly love them are fighting for them and spending time with them, not making them feel less than. Then I put the fire out and convince Neighbor Craig to leave. They ask me not to kill Maynard. Yuki also bolts from the basement.

I uncoil my fire whips, the rage I have for this pig of a man fueling the flames. I won’t kill him, but he will never be the same after today. I send my whips at him, the fire branding his skin with intricate serpent-like marks. He screams in pain, and when I’m finished, I admire my work. “Now everyone will know you’re a snake in a pig’s body.” I snag two of the three remaining katanas and leave the house. It’s smoldering, but not ruined.

I watch Mundy enter the house after we leave. I’m not sure what else he did there, but he comes back out with two katanas. Having finished our mission, we let our nerves rest looking out at the ocean and then find our way back into the party scene in Ravel.

Regrets and Desires[edit | edit source]

  1. She dreams of one day manipulating all the elements.
  2. Sameera is looking for an item to help her manipulate the earth element. All she has is rumors.
  3. Sameera also really wanted one of those pickles on a stick you can get at a festival.
  4. She regrets playing a part in Maynard's catastrophic choices

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Sameera is short, but what she lacks in height she makes up for with a somewhat grating personality. Her overall build is that of a willow branch—thin, lithe, and light on her feet. Her skin is a ruddy copper color that stutters and shifts under more discerning examination, similar to the way air and fire mingle at the peak of a burning campfire.

She wears a strange piece of armor, simple blue clothing, hand-embroidered with small flames at the collar and wrists. It gives nothing away regarding her status, but it is clean, and the workmanship is deliberate and careful. Her eyes are blue, ringed with a persistent edge of fatigue. Her features are soft, her smile wide and bright, when it shows up.

Her posture is nonchalant, as though she couldn’t care less about what is happening around her. It lends her an air of arrogance—one that evaporates the moment she opens her mouth.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Sameera is strong headed, sarcastic, and sometimes too direct. She can find herself easily offending others when she isn't filtering her thoughts. This is driven mostly by her curiosity and willingness to ask questions. She is always looking for the fastest way out. Since being brought back to life the otherwise carefree mentality has stuttered. She struggles with trust and doesn't understand how quickly her world fell apart. She hasn't really been sleeping well since returning to the living. It makes her impatient and impulsive.

The Story As I Saw It[edit | edit source]
