History[edit | edit source]
Tessa Night was born and raised in Galik, and attended the Church of the Silent Star for as long as she could remember. Her parents ran a general store in the suburbs of Galik, and their dream was to see Tessa join the Watchers of The Veilwatch. Tessa participated in every program she could in order to be accepted, and officially joined the ranks at 18 years old.
During her time in the Church of the Silent Star, she was taught that magic would be the downfall of civilization—and it was her job to stop those who used it. She worked her whole life to become a Watcher, and was elated to have received her first mission. Motivated by her instilled passion against magic, she executed the mission perfectly -- that is, until she came face to face with the magician she was ordered to kill. Silently watching from her dark corner of the mage's tower, ready to perform her execution, Tessa was moved by the mage's song as he worked. He sung of a tale from his childhood, about how he learned magic to help heal the nature around his home after it was set fire by ruffians. She hesitated, nothing from her training or belief system growing up had ever allowed magic users to hold personality, character, or any such human dimension. Tessa left without laying a finger on the mage.
That week, Tessa wandered the city of Galik searching for answers. Her eyes were opened to other cultures and belief systems that she had so adamantly dismissed as false previously. She realized her order had misled her about the history of magic, and it's not right to make assumptions about groups of people just because they use magic. Knowing that she could never go back to the Veilwatchers, she wrote a letter to her parents and set sail for Osugbo for a new beginning.
Now, she work odd jobs using her skills, still questioning and trying to un-learn and re-learn her morals, specifically around magic. Magic isn’t inherently evil. Some use it for good or for simple things. She has come to understand that evil comes in many forms, magic or not. She is trying her best to find redemption for her misbeliefs by seeking out evil and trying to eliminate it. Most recently, Tessa crossed paths with a being named Jaxzo'llan — a creature made from magic, but not by choice. In Jaxzo, Tessa sees a reflection of every life she once helped to shackle. Now, she’s determined to right her past wrongs: not by suppressing magic, but by helping Jaxzo find the freedom that Tessa once vehemently denied others.
